Handball in Granollers

Granollers, city of handball. Get to know our international tournament, Granollers CUP, and enjoy the city.

The city of Granollers has always been associated with handball, the city’s sport par excellence. For generations, Granollers has loved handball and boasts one of the best facilities in the province for this sport.
Club Balonmano Granollers is the city’s handball club. It’s a historical club both in Catalonia and Spain and every year organises the international tournament known as the Granollers Cup.

Granollers Handball Club

Club Balonmano Granollers was founded in 1944. Right from the start, the club quickly achieved a high competitive level, both in 11-a-side and 7-a-side (introduced for the first time in Spain in the city of Granollers).

One of the special features of Club Balonmano Granollers is its commitment to training and its youth academy, promoting a large number of athletes and a technical team of the highest level internationally.

In the 2014/2015 season it became the only club in Spain with both a male and female first team in the highest category of Spanish handball, and this is still the case today.

It has played almost every season in the highest category of Spanish handball and is among the clubs with the most titles, becoming a benchmark for the sport.

In 1959 it was the first club in Spain to take part in a European competition and its greatest international success came in 1976 in the EHF Cup Winners’ Cup, this being the first European title for a Spanish handball team.

Thanks to this tradition, Granollers became an Olympic handball site in the Barcelona’92 Olympic Games and the Palau d’Esports in Granollers was built especially for that event. It was also the venue for the 2013 World Men’s Handball Championship and will hold the 2021 World Women’s Handball Championship.

International Granollers Cup Tournament

Granollers is famous for holding, every year, one of the world’s most renowned handball tournaments: the Granollers Cup. The competition involves over 5,000 players and more than 350 teams each year.

This tournament, normally held towards the end of June, is a unique chance to enjoy both sport and the city, as 1,200 games are played in four days.

The matches are played at different sites in the city, in five pavilions and also on special courts set up in the central Plaça de la Porxada.

For four days, handball players aged up to 20 from all over the world transform the city. The young people stay at schools, camp sites and hotels and fill the city’s streets with their enthusiasm about competing in the most important youth handball tournament in southern Europe. While they’re here, they mix with young people from different countries and enjoy a cultural exchange that also enriches them as athletes.

The Granollers Cup is open to clubs worldwide and detailed information can be found on its official website.

We invite you to visit the city during the tournament and enjoy, together with the locals, a wonderful festival of handball.
